Meet the Author!

Lisa Gardner – 1pm, Wednesday, February 6th

Lisa Gardner is the well-known bestselling author of several works of suspense. Her latest, Touch and Go, due out February 5, 2013, starts iwth the disappearance of Justin and Libby Denbe, along with their beautiful 15 year-old daughter. Investigator Tessa Leone must race against time to expose the Denbes’ darkest secrets to discover who would want to kidnap such a perfect little family and just how far they are willing to go.

Like most of her previous novels, Touch and Go, will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Books Make the Best Gifts

You are cordially invited to our first “Publisher Review.” This Thursday, November 15 at 7pm we have representatives from 4 publishers coming in to discuss holiday books you don’t want to miss. Random House, Macmillan, Sourcebook and Houghton Mifflin will all be discussing their “picks” from children’s books to adults–fiction, non-fiction and everything in between. So come to the library and do some shopping.
Volunteers will be available for gift-wrapping.
Lake Forest bookstore will have books available for purchase.

Chicagoan and best-selling author Paretsky will join us on Saturday, August 25 at 1:00PM for a discussion of her amazing body of work, including her latest, Breakdown. Her character, V. I. Warshawski, is a mystery readers’s staple for intrigue and suspense.  Register

Author Charlie Newton to visit Jan. 14

This Edgar Award finalist follows his acclaimed debut, Calumet City, with a gritty and complex novel that shows the gang-infested streets of Chicago. In Start Shooting, police officers Bobby and Ruben Vargas are implicated in an old murder by a series of newspaper articles. This atmospheric novel will grab you and keep you turning pages.

Warren Newport Public Library’s Winter Reading Club

The Winter Reading Club for adults and teens began Saturday, January 15 and continues for 6 weeks ending February 26.  Adults and teens are welcome to sign-up. When you register at the adult reference desk you will be provided with a log and your choice of a pre-publication book to choose from.
Just fill out a  log after you  have read 6 books. There is no limit! We are encouraging everyone to write a review (found on the back of log) but will accept a review online. These reviews (if appropriate) will be added to the More Than Just Books blog. First names will be included—-no last names. Each review/log returned will be eligible for a weekly prize drawing and will also be included in the grand prize drawing the week of March 1. The grand prize is a Nook. We hope to see you all reading at the library.

Romance Readers Unite!!!

The September issue of ‘Publishing Trends’ from Market Partners offers an interesting publishing statistic. It has been found that romance is the largest fiction category and is expected to account for 13.3% of the consumer book market in 2008. So….with those kinds of numbers it is with great pleasure that I get to announce two wonderful romance authors coming to Warren-Newport Public Library. On Monday, October 13 at 7:00 pm Julia Quinn and Laura Guhrke will be here.

Laura Guhrke has received numerous honors and critical acclaim for her novels and writing style. She has one of the most natural voices in historical romances. She currently writing her 13th novel.

Julia Quinn, Harvard graduate, decided to become a writer after first contemplating medical school. She has written many novels that features warmth, humor and great dialog. She has been nominated several times for the Romance Writers of America (RWA) awards.

Novels will be available for purchase and signing. Please join us in welcoming these fabulous authors.

Cozy Library Extravaganza

Coming up Saturday, October 18th, the library will be hosting a “Cozy Library Author Extravaganza!”

Scheduled to appear are Libby Hellmann, Lauren Willig, Robert Dalby, Denise Swanson, Cordelia Biddle, Helen Osterman, Deb Baker, Charles Dickinson and Julie Hyzy. Each will discuss their work and answer questions. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Ready for Summer Reading?

Remember…our reading program isn’t just for kids! Adults can get in on the action (and prizes) too.

Beginning June 14th and running through July 26th, you will be asked to log your reading time up to 30 hours. In addition to books, “reading” can include listening to books on CD, reading online blogs, magazines, newspapers, graphic novels, etc.

Upon signing up for the program, you will receive two Ravinia tickets – but make sure to get here early because tickets are very limited this year – and a prepub book. Weekly prizes will be given away in addition to a final prize drawing for those who turn in their minutes.

It finally feels as though summer is here to stay, so mark it on your calendar today!

Change to Dorothea Benton Frank’s Visit


Due to a scheduling conflict, Dorothea has had to change the time of her upcoming visit. She will be here on Friday, April 25th at 11:00 am. She will be discussing her newest novel, “Bulls Island.”
