Les Miserables Soundtrack Review

I saw the movie Les Miserables in the theater over the holidays.  I really liked it.  So when I saw that the Les Miserables movie soundtrack came out, I was excited.  Unfortunately, after listening to it, I was disappointed.   When the CD said Highlights from the motion picture soundtrack, that’s what they mean.  The CD is serious lacking some important songs, especially the song Little People.  I did enjoy listening to Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman singing.  If you’re looking for the complete musical, check out the cd entitled Les Miserables: the original London Cast.  I think you will enjoy it more.  I have to say that some of my dislike of the soundtrack may be because I listened to the original London cast recording before listening to the highlights of the movie soundtrack CD.  The cast recordings are almost always are better than any movie remake cd.  Just my opinion.  Listen and tell me what you think.

Lincoln Movie Review: The great debate

I went to see the movie Lincoln by Steven Spielberg last week.  I liked the movie a lot. Ron, our guest reviewer, did not. He wrote a review, as did I. So I thought I’d post both on this blog and let you decide.  Daniel Day-Lewis plays Abraham Lincoln in the midst of trying to pass the 13th Amendment, which would abolish slavery.  I (Amy) was mesmorized by Day-Lewis’s performance. I felt like I was looking at Lincoln.  Sally Field played Mary Todd Lincoln.  I didn’t think that she was right for the part. All I kept seeing was Sally Field instead of Mary Todd.  The political goings on in the movie were a bit confusing at times, because I forgot who people were, I couldn’t keep them straight.  Overall, I really enjoyed the experience watching this movie.  I felt as if I was there.  Day-Lewis will definitely be in Oscar contention for his performance, and I predict he will win for Best Actor. 4 stars

Here is Ron’s Review: Although three of the Lincolns, Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis), Mary Todd Lincoln (Sally Field), and Robert Lincoln (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are included in this film, the film is sadly, and  badly mistitled since it mainly deals with the political maneuverings, wrangling, intimidation and deceits engaged in by the politicians of the time, in relation to the passage of the thirteenth amendment. It’s true that exemplars of the costumes worn by some of the principals exist and may have been expertly copied, and the language used may be true to the original, but the tones of voice, and speakers’ attitudes remain left to interpretation. Generally, the film is drab and dark, physically and emotionally. Apparently the sun never shone on the set, and some characters were inserted and given roles to satisfy some sort of political correctness need. One would think it would have been prudent to leave out the Anglo-Saxon f-word as well. 2 stars

So what did you think of this movie?

Try this author: Shelley Shepard Gray

Do you read Amish fiction and have run out of books to read?  Well, you should try books by Shelley Shepard Gray.  I don’t normally read Amish fiction in general, but I did pick up one of her books awhile back and really enjoyed it.   What I liked about her books is that they with difficult issues that anyone could deal with such as: cancer, losing a home, an abusive marriage.  We have most of her books at the library.  Check one out and see what you think.  Are there other authors that you would recommend?

The Lorax Review

YouTube Preview Image

The Lorax is a wonderful family movie.  Based on the book by Dr. Seuss, The Lorax has a  wonderful cast including Danny Devito, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Betty White.  This movie is made by the same people who created Despicable Me.  The story begins with Ted who lives in a world that is artifically made.   He finds out that there used to be real trees and so he sets out to see what happened.  If you liked the book, I think you will like this faithful adaptation of the movie. Check it out from the library today!

Hunger Games Movies

I enjoyed watching the Hunger Games in the theater.  Catching Fire will be in theaters November 2013.  Mockingjay is going to be split into 2 films: Mockingjay part 1 and Mockingjay part 2, shown in theaters 2014 & 2015 respectively  Check out this link for more details.  This seems to be a trend where the studios spilt up the last book into 2 parts to make more money.  If Tolkien’s tomes can be made into 3 movies, one for each book, surely the Hunger Games trilogy should be able to do the same!  I’m interest to hear what you think?
