Backman’s most recent book Beartown has a similar feel to A Man Called Ove in that it has a slow pace with introspective characters yet really manages to be a page-turner. However, the topics couldn’t be more different. Beartown is a small town in Canada where hockey is everything. The town’s team is very talented and the star player has serious potential to go all the way to the NHL.
Then a crime happens and the town is in an uproar. Who is at fault? What happens to the beloved hockey team? And what will this do to the city of Beartown?
While not perfect, I really enjoyed this story. Backman has a way of writing quietly but with feeling. Even the climactic moments are written with an even tone that feels subdued. It’s almost as if he’s whispering the words to you. Check out Beartown and A Man Called Ove to see what all the fuss is about.
